Pre-Landfall 3 | Summary
Posting Date: September 2, 2009, 7:00:00 AM
Hurricane Jimena, which had been a powerful Category 4 hurricane only yesterday, is now a Category 2 storm. As of 11:00 a.m. EDT, Jimena was located approximately 28 miles (45 kilometers) south of Cabo San Lazaro, Mexico. Maximum sustained winds are near 105 mph with higher gusts and additional weakening is forecast over the next day. The center of the system is moving to the north-northwest at near 13 mph.
Jimena churned more or less parallel to Mexico’s Baja California peninsula coast the last few days, causing minimal damage to most of the resorts, including Los Cabos. According to the National Hurricane Center, Jimena is expected to arrive on the sparsely-populated west coast of the peninsula later tonight or tomorrow—possibly at hurricane strength. Forecasters expect rain accumulations of five to ten inches and a storm surge could produce significant flooding along the Baja coast.
