Landfall | Summary
Posting Date: October 21, 2009, 11:30:00 AM
Tropical Storm Rick made landfall along a low-lying stretch of Mexico’s west-central coast near Mazatlan (population 352,471), the second-largest city in the state. Overnight, Rick continued to weaken and came ashore with sustained winds of near 55 mph. The storm was centered about 15 miles (25 kilometers) north-northeast of Mazatlan and is traveling to the northeast at about 17 mph (26 kph).
Tropical Storm Rick lashed southern Los Cabos with gusty winds and heavy rain; however, there have been no immediate reports of storm-related damage. In preparation of the storm’s arrival, local officials urged residents living in makeshift homes and low-lying areas to seek shelter.
There are currently tropical storm warnings in place for the Mexican mainland from San Blas to Altata. Rainfall accumulations between four and six inches are expected in Sinaloa and Durango in west-central Mexico, according to the National Hurricane Center (NHC), with up to 10 inches of precipitation possible in isolated pockets.
Rick is expected to weaken rapidly as it interacts with the Sierra Madre mountain chain and dissipate as it encounters increased wind shear.
The AIR tropical cyclone team will continue to monitor the progress of Rick and will provide updates as needed.
