Posting Date: October 2, 2009, 1:00:00 PM
To the east of Typhoon Parma over the Pacific, Typhoon Melor strengthened overnight and it is now also a Category 4 storm, according to the Joint Typhoon Warning Center (JWTC). Melor, the 11th named storm of the northwest Pacific cyclone season, was located 491 km (305 mi) east- northeast of the U.S. territory of Guam as of the JTWC’s 11:00 am advisory. The storm’s winds are currently 213 kph (132 mph) and it is moving northwest at 15 kph (9 mph). A typhoon warning remains in effect for Saipan and Tinian.
The typhoon is expected to intensify and it may become a supertyphoon within the next day. Its current forecast track has Melor crossing the island chain of Saipan, north of Guam, curving to the north, and heading toward Japan during the next five days.
The AIR Tropical cyclone team will continue to monitor the progress of both storms and will issue updates, as warranted.
