Hurricane Earl weakened more quickly than had been anticipated on Friday, September 3. The 5 pm advisory from the National Hurricane Center still had Earl bypassing Massachusetts' Nantucket and Cape Cod at hurricane strength. But cooler sea-surface temperatures and dry air associated with an upper level trough took its toll and by 11 pm Earl had been downgraded to a tropical storm. Earl, still a large system, made its closest approach to Nantucket at around 2 am on Saturday, bringing periods of heavy rain, tropical storm force winds and high waves--but little in the way of damage. AIR does not expect any significant insured losses from Hurricane Earl.
