Post Landfall 3 | Summary
Posting Date: October 25, 2010, 12:30:00 PM
After wreaking havoc in the Philippines and causing flooding and landslides in Taiwan, Typhoon Megi made a second landfall in Zhangpu City in China’s southeastern province of Fujian at 0655 UTC October 23 (12:55 Saturday p.m. local time). Megi weakened before landfall and arrived at the coast as a tropical storm with sustained winds of around 65 mph. According to the Japan Meteorological Agency, Megi dissipated 12 hours after landfall.
Widespread flooding has been reported across Fujian Province and more than 13 inches of rain have fallen in Quanzhou, Xiamen, Zhangpu and Zhangzhou. In advance of the storm’s arrival, local officials evacuated an estimated 313,000 residents. Local news agencies have reported flooded streets, uprooted trees and swollen waterways.
According to the provincial flood control office, more than 26,000 hectares of crops have been destroyed. Early official reports indicate that Megi has caused economic losses of around 2.8 billion yuan (USD 410 million) across the province, including 1.5 billion yuan (USD 220 million) in the city of Zhangzhou. While some damage is anticipated to residential properties, a high proportion of residential losses are likely not insured. Overall the penetration of residential insurance in the Fujian province is estimated at only 5%.
