Post Landfall 2 | Summary
Posting Date: October 20, 2016, 10:00:00 PM
After making landfall on northern Luzon in the Philippines as a Category 4-equivalent storm, Haima made it across the island but not before losing much of its strength after it encountered Mount Sicapoo, which at 2,361 meters is the Solsona Mountain Range’s highest peak. Precipitation from Haima measuring 368 mm was recorded in Baguio, located about 250 km south of Haima’s track. In Tuguegarao, wind gusted to 90 km/h for four hours, and a gust as strong as 122 km/h was recorded in Laoag. Thirteen fatalities have been reported in the Philippines as a result of Haima.
Haima made a second landfall around 12 noon local time (4:00 UTC) as a Category 1-equivalent storm in eastern Guandong Province, China, near the city of Shanwei, which is roughly 110 km east of Hong Kong, where gusts up to 109 km/h were recorded. Shanwei experienced gusts up to 94 km/h and then the winds dropped to around 61 km/h. Precipitation in Shanwei amounted to 66 mm by 2 p.m. local time. At Hong Kong International Airport, maximum sustained winds of 69 km/h were recorded. Eastern Guangdong is expected to get 125-250 mm of rain, with amounts of more than 300 mm in some localized areas. Along its track toward Shanghai, Haima is expected to dump 75-150 mm of rain.
Reported Impacts
More than 740 flights to and from Hong Kong were canceled or delayed as of 2 p.m. local time. Ferry and bus services were suspended, and trains are running on an adjusted schedule. Schools and offices were closed, and the stock exchange canceled trading today. Some brokerage firms enacted their contingency plans so that staff could keep trading from home or nearby hotels. It is the second time that the stock exchange closed this year. The first was on August 2 for Typhoon Nida. Roads were not closed, but they were clear, after warnings from the Hong Kong Observatory. Damage in Hong Kong is limited and mostly involves more than 150 toppled trees, one of which partially blocked a Causeway Bay highway.
No major damage or fatality reports have come from China. In Guangdong, nine cities issued the highest level alert: red. In Shenzhen, which lies 17 km north-northwest of Hong Kong, schools and businesses were closed today.
Forecast and Intensity
Haima has weakened to below typhoon status and is expected to continue weakening to become a tropical rainstorm by the afternoon tomorrow local time as it travels toward Shanghai. Through Saturday night local time rain-induced flooding and mudslides will continue to pose a threat in the area comprising eastern Guangdong to southern Jiangsu, northern Zhejiang, and Shanghai.
