Pre-Landfall 1 | Summary
Posting Date: December 23, 2016, 6:00:00 AM
Typhoon Nock-ten—known in the Philippine area of responsibility as Nina—is forecast to track through the north and central Philippines on December 25 and 26, bringing damaging wind and heavy precipitation to the most populous part of the country. Nock-ten is expected to make landfall in Bicol Region, Samar, or Quezon Province early Christmas Day as the equivalent of a Category 2 hurricane on the Saffir-Simpson Scale, or possibly as a Category 3-equivalent storm. Some areas may see as much as 10 inches of rain.

Nock-ten will weaken as it crosses the country in response to cooler and drier air and its interaction with land. It will likely impact Metro Manila beginning late in the day on Christmas through the following morning hours before crossing the South China Sea toward northern Vietnam. The Metro Manila area—also known as the National Capital Region (NCR)—contains 16 cities and is the most densely populated region of the Philippines and the 7th most populous metropolitan area in Asia. Because of this population density, Nock-ten may have significant impact.
Further south in the Pacific, Tropical Cyclone Yvette may also make landfall in Australia on Christmas Day in the eastern Pilbara region or the western Kimberley coast.
The AIR tropical cyclone team continues to monitor typhoon activity in the Pacific and will provide updates as warranted.
