Landfall | Summary
Posting Date: September 14, 2020, 7:00:00 AM
Hurricane Paulette made Bermuda’s first hurricane landfall since 2014 when it came ashore at about 5 a.m. AST (1500 UTC) on Monday, September 14. Three hours later it was still over the island, moving north-northwest at almost 12 mph (19 km/h) delivering hurricane force winds and torrential rainfall. Power outages have been reported, and although Bermuda benefits from stringent building codes, some wind damage to structures is anticipated because the storm struck the small island directly rather than bypassing it. Storm surge coinciding with an unusually high tide is expected to cause coastal flooding, and with rainfall totals as high as 6 inches anticipated some inland flooding is also likely. Paulette is forecast to strengthen as it moves away from Bermuda and to be at or near major hurricane strength on Tuesday as its track takes it northeastward and away from the North American coast.
