Typhoon Haishen made landfall around 9 a.m. local time (00:00 UTC) on September 7, in Ulsan, South Korea, with 1-minute sustained wind speeds of 143 km/h (89 mph), the equivalent of a strong Category 1 hurricane on the Saffir-Simpson Scale. Ulsan is located in the southeastern part of South Korea, just north of Busan, the country’s second-largest city and the world’s fifth-largest port.
Before making landfall, Haishen passed close by the southernmost and third-largest island of Japan, Kyushu, in the overnight hours, causing major hurricane–force winds of 195 km/h (121 mph), the equivalent of a Category 3 hurricane.
