Typhoon Cempaka made landfall in the city of Yangjiang in the Jiangcheng district in South China’s Guangdong Province on the night of July 20, local time, becoming the first typhoon to make landfall in China this year. The storm packed 1-minute sustained winds of about 74 mph at landfall, according to the Japan Meteorological Agency, which is the equivalent of a Category 1 hurricane on the Saffir-Simpson Scale. The slow-moving storm was upgraded to a typhoon just hours before landfall. Flooding from heavy rain associated with this system is likely to drive potential losses.
