Hurricane Lisa made landfall yesterday afternoon along the coast of Belize, near the mouth of the Sibun River, 10 miles south of Belize City, with maximum 1-minute sustained winds of 85 mph and a minimum central pressure of 990 mb. Lisa then moved inland, bringing high winds and torrential rain to parts of northern Guatemala and southern Mexico, and has since been downgraded to a Tropical Depression.
ALERT™ subscribers can download similar stochastic event (SSE) IDs for Hurricane Lisa from the Downloads tab of this posting on the ALERT website. Compatible with Touchstone® and Touchstone Re™, the SSEs were selected based on Lisa’s key meteorological parameters at landfall. They should only be used with exposures in Belize.
Though there were a few reports near Belize City of homes having roofs blown off, flooding is expected to be the main driver of damage from Lisa. A storm surge of up to 4 to 6 feet was forecast for the area around landfall, and a widespread 4 to 6 inches of rain were forecast across the storm’s path, with as much as 10 inches possible in some locales. While Belize does see regular hurricane landfalls, Lisa is the first such storm to impact the nation in the month of November in 80 years.
Lisa is expected to remerge into the Gulf of Mexico on Friday but is not expected to restrengthen significantly. As such, this is the final planned ALERT for Hurricane Lisa.
