August 8 Update | Summary
Posting Date: August 8, 2023, 4:00:00 PM
Khanun, now a Strong Tropical Storm, is located approximately 65 miles (~105 km) south of Sasebo, Japan, has maximum 1-minute sustained winds of 58 mph (~93 km/h), and is moving north-northwest at 8 mph, per the Joint Typhoon Warning Center. The storm will encounter warm sea surface temperatures as it continues its track alongside Kagoshima on toward South Korea, and some strengthening is still possible prior to a forecast landfall on the Korean peninsula on Thursday.
If Khanun strengthens and impacts the Korean peninsula or other areas at official Typhoon status (1-minute sustained winds greater than 74 mph), we will revisit the event and release similar stochastic events on Friday, August 11th. However, if the current forecast holds, no additional updates are planned for Khanun.
