Okinawa Impacts | Summary
Posting Date: August 3, 2023, 2:00:00 PM
Typhoon Khanun passed through Okinawa prefecture in Japan over the past day, bringing high winds and heavy rains to its islands. The storm brought wind gusts of 159 km/h (~98 mph) to Tokashikijima Island, and 155 km/h (~96 mph) to Kumejima airport. 166,000 lost power as a result of the cyclone, the vast majority in Okinawa, and so far two deaths and 41 injuries have been reported. With heavy precipitation – as high as 266 mm (~10 inches) in Yomitan village with a widespread 150 to 200 mm (~6 to 8 inches) in the forecast – the risk of landslides and further damage resulting is high.
As of 13:00 UTC on August 3 (10:00 pm local time), Khanun was located approximately 75 miles west of Kadena Air Base, with an estimated minimum central pressure of 945 mb and maximum 10-minute sustained winds around 40 m/s (80 kt, ~89 mph), per the Japan Meteorological Agency (JMA). The storm is currently nearly stationary and expected to weaken somewhat in the next 1-2 days. After that, the storm is forecast to move to the west-northwest and then turn further north, potentially impacting southern Japan early next week. The forecast has changed considerably over the last couple of days, and there remains significant uncertainty in where and at how intense Khanun may ultimately impact Japan next week.
The Verisk ALERT team continues to monitor Typhoon Khanun and will issue updates next week as warranted.
