Typhoon Lan is bearing down on the Kii peninsula Tuesday morning, the second cyclone to impact Japan in the past week. As of 1800 UTC on 14 August, Lan was positioned just off the coast of Wakayama prefecture, with a minimum central pressure of 975 mb and maximum sustained 10-minute winds of 30 m/s (~108 km/h, ~67 mph), per the Japan Meteorological Agency.
While Lan’s winds will pack a punch, flooding and resulting landslides are another potential cause for concern with Lan. The Tokai region could see rainfall totals as high as 450 mm (~18 inches), and the Kansai region could see as much as 400 mm (~16 inches) of precipitation from the cyclone. Japan Airlines cancelled 240 flights ahead of the storm, and further impacts to air and rail travel are anticipated on Tuesday. The storm is expected to move north-northeast over Honshu before exiting into the Sea of Japan on Wednesday morning.
