Landfall Update | Summary
Posting Date: September 27, 2024, 10:00:00 AM
Hurricane Helene made landfall last night in the Big Bend region of Florida as a category 4 storm with a minimum central pressure of 938 mb. The storm’s track shifted east as it approached the coast, which appears to have spared Tallahassee and Atlanta from the worst wind impacts. While Helene will go on record as the strongest storm in recorded history to make landfall in this area of Florida, wind impacts generally do not appear to have reached the worst predictions. Observations show sustained windspeeds approaching hurricane force in the area around landfall, with a gust of 98 mph reported at Perry and 84 mph at Cedar Key. Inundation from surge was observed along the west coast of Florida as Helene approached. Record water levels were observed in St. Petersburg and Cedar Key. More than 3.5 million households across the storm’s footprint are currently without power, per poweroutage.us.
ALERT™ subscribers can download similar stochastic event (SSE) IDs for Helene from the Downloads tab of this posting on the ALERT website. Compatible with Touchstone® and Touchstone Re™, the SSEs were selected based on the event’s projected key meteorological parameters at landfall, in particular storm track, minimum central pressure, estimated winds, forward speed, and landfall angle. They were selected primarily for impacts in Florida and can also be used to broadly capture potential storm impacts in Georgia.
The Verisk ALERT Team plans to provide an industry loss estimate, event sets for Touchstone and Touchstone Re with five custom modeled scenarios of Hurricane Helene, industry loss based similar stochastic events, and shapefiles of the median wind and storm surge modeled footprints on Wednesday, October 2. If there are any changes to this plan, we will communicate through this channel. Please contact your Verisk representative with any additional questions about this event.
