Landfall SSEs | Summary
Posting Date: August 5, 2024, 10:00:00 AM
Hurricane Debby made landfall this morning in the Big Bend region of Florida as a Saffir-Simpson Category 1 storm. As of 8:00am EDT, Debby was located just onshore about 60 miles north-northwest of Cedar Key, Florida, with estimated maximum 1-minute sustained winds of 75 mph and a minimum central pressure of 979 mb.
ALERT™ subscribers can download similar stochastic event (SSE) IDs for Hurricane Debby from the Downloads tab of this posting on the ALERT website. Compatible with Touchstone® and Touchstone Re™, the SSEs were selected based on the event’s projected key meteorological parameters at landfall, in particular storm track, minimum central pressure, estimated winds, forward speed, and landfall angle. They were selected for wind impacts in Florida.
Debby is expected to slow down and turn to the northeast after landfall, bringing prodigious rainfall to northern Florida, Georgia, and the Carolinas over the coming week. Parts of the Carolinas could see in excess of 20 inches of rain from Debby through Saturday, though it is too soon to pinpoint where the greatest rainfall impacts will eventually fall. Debby may briefly track offshore of the Carolinas as well before turning back to the west, but significant re-strengthening is not forecast in that time.
No additional ALERT postings are planned at this time for Debby, however given the precipitation forecast, we are continuing to closely monitor the situation. We will provide an update later this week as the situation continues to develop. In the meantime, if you have any questions, please contact your Verisk representative.
