Ernesto made landfall on the island of Bermuda on Saturday morning, August 17th, as a Saffir-Simpson category 1 storm. Sustained winds as high as 61 mph were observed and gusts exceeded 80 mph at times. The storm brought power outages to the vast majority of the island, but damage was limited. Local authorities noted they had not received any reports of major structural damage, though they had gotten a number of emergency calls related to flash flooding. Much of the island received more than six inches of rain as Ernesto passed over.
ALERT™ subscribers can download similar stochastic event (SSE) IDs for Hurricane Ernesto’s Bermuda impacts from the Downloads tab of this posting. Compatible with Touchstone® and Touchstone Re™, the SSEs were selected based on the event’s projected key meteorological parameters at landfall, in particular storm track, minimum central pressure, estimated winds, forward speed, and landfall angle. They should be used with exposures in Bermuda.
Ernesto is now well off the coastline of New England, accelerating on a northeast trajectory over the next couple of days into the northern Atlantic and bringing large swells to ocean beaches facing the storm on the U.S. east coast and Canadian maritime provinces, but no significant threats to land otherwise. As such, no additional ALERT postings are planned for Ernesto. Please contact your Verisk representative with any additional questions about this event.
