Typhoon Bebinca made landfall made landfall Monday morning local time in Shanghai, China, the strongest storm to do so in that city since 1949. The Saffir-Simpson category 1 equivalent storm has since moved westward into mainland China, bringing gusty winds and flooding rains. A red alert was issued for the city of Shanghai, closing both of the city’s airports and limiting both highway and rail travel to, from, and around the city. The cyclone has caused flash flooding and uprooted trees, with minor building damage reported thus far. More than 400,000 persons were evacuated ahead of Bebinca’s arrival.
