Similar Stochastic Events - China | Summary
Posting Date: July 25, 2024, 12:00:00 PM
Gaemi made landfall along the coast of Fujian, China, at 7:50 pm local time this evening. The storm has weakened considerably since its interaction with Taiwan, and while still classified as a Typhoon at landfall by the Chinese Meteorological Agency, it had been downgraded to a Tropical Storm by the Joint Typhoon Warning Center and to a Strong Tropical Storm by the Japan Meteorological Agency prior to this latest landfall. Up to 200 mm (10 inches) of rain are forecast along Gaemi’s path as it tracks northeast across China.
ALERT™ subscribers can download similar stochastic event (SSE) IDs for Typhoon Gaemi’s impacts in China from the Downloads tab of this posting on the ALERT website. Compatible with Touchstone® and Touchstone Re™, the SSEs were selected based on the event’s track, minimum central pressure, estimated winds, forward speed, and landfall angle. They should only be used with exposures in China.
After combining with seasonal monsoon rains to bring historic precipitation and flooding to the Philippines (where the storm was known as Carina), Gaemi moved on to Taiwan on Wednesday. The storm approached the island moving west-northwest, but on final approach, due to interaction with the mountainous terrain on Taiwan’s east coast, turned south along the coastline then looped back around, eventually making landfall as a Category 3 equivalent on the Saffir-Simpson scale and tracking across the island south of Taipei. While unusual in general for tropical cyclones, this looping motion has been observed in other typhoons on approach to Taiwan in the past, including Typhoon Krosa in 2007.
In Yilan County, there were reports of utility poles knocked down by the storm’s winds. Many reports of flooding across low lying areas, including in Tainan, Kaohsiung, Pingtung and Yunlin. There have not been reports of significant damage to engineered or well-built structures from wind at this time. Winds in Taipei City gusted to Typhoon strength in some areas, but significant damage has not been reported there. Taiwan Semiconductor has said they do not anticipate any significant impacts to their operations. Two people have been killed and 279 injured by the storm in Taiwan, in addition to 22 deaths in the Philippines.
This is the final planned ALERT posting for Typhoon Gaemi. Please contact your Verisk representative with any additional questions about this event.
