Typhoon Kong-Rey made landfall Thursday afternoon in Taiwan, near the city of Taitung, as a Saffir-Simpson Category 4 equivalent storm. A large storm – Kong-Rey’s winds span the entire island of Taiwan – it caused the closure of schools, financial markets, and the cancellation of more than 500 flights. Roof damage has been reported on Lanyu Island, in the path of Kong-Rey as it approached Taiwan, and up to a meter of rain was forecast to fall over some of the mountainous areas of eastern Taiwan, potentially triggering landslides.
ALERT™ subscribers can download similar stochastic event (SSE) IDs for Typhoon Kong-Rey’s impacts in Taiwan from the Downloads tab of this posting on the ALERT website. Compatible with Touchstone® and Touchstone Re™, the SSEs were selected based on the event’s track, minimum central pressure, estimated winds, forward speed, and landfall angle. They should only be used with exposures in Taiwan.
Kong-Rey will pass into the Taiwan strait and is expected to continue to weaken as it then accelerates north and east toward southern Japan. Given the significant weakening currently forecast for Kong-Rey, no additional ALERT postings are currently planned. Please contact your Verisk representative with any questions.
