After spending a couple of days drifting slowly south of Taiwan, Typhoon Krathon final made landfall around midday local time in the city of Kaohsiung as a category 1 storm. Krathon, which was previously classified as a Super Typhoon before upwelling due to its near stationary movement weakened the storm as it approached Taiwan, was highly unusual in the path it took toward the island. While most typhoons impacting Taiwan approach the mountainous east coast of the island, Krathon instead curved around to the south of the island, then drifted north to make a rare landfall in Taiwan’s second most populous city.

Compatible with Touchstone® and Touchstone Re™, the SSEs were selected based on the event’s track, minimum central pressure, estimated winds, forward speed, and landfall angle.
