Typhoon Shanshan made landfall on Kyushu Island, Japan on Thursday as a Saffir-Simpson category 2 equivalent storm. The slow-moving storm has dropped a prodigious amount of rain across Kyushu, with totals reaching as high as 800 millimeters (~31 inches) in some areas. Wind damage was also observed, mainly minor, with reports of broken windows and damage to roof coverings. The city of Miyazaki had more than 100 such reports as of Thursday evening local time, along with some reports of damage from flooding. The storm has cancelled hundreds of flights and stopped train services in the impacted parts of the country. Toyota provisionally closed its 14 factories in Japan, though no significant damage has been reported to these thus far; Nissan and Honda also temporarily shut down some of their factory operations. More than 5 million people were evacuated as a result of the storm.
ALERT™ subscribers can download similar stochastic event (SSE) IDs for Typhoon Shanshan from the Downloads tab of this posting on the ALERT website. Compatible with Touchstone® and Touchstone Re™, the SSEs were selected based on the event’s projected key meteorological parameters at landfall, in particular storm track, minimum central pressure, estimated winds, forward speed, and landfall angle, as well as wind observations and broadly their potential for flooding. They were selected for exposures in Japan.
Shanshan is expected to continue to weaken as it moves northeastward then east over the next couple of days. Heavy rainfall and resulting impacts are the greatest ongoing threat to property from Shanshan. The Verisk ALERT team will continue to monitor Shanshan and its flooding potential over the next several days. No additional ALERT postings are planned for Shanshan at this time, but we will make a final determination as to the potential for additional postings by early next week and provide an update to that end at that time.
