11 March Update | Summary
Posting Date: March 11, 2025, 3:00:00 PM
Cleanup is underway after Cyclone Alfred dropped flooding rainfall across a wide swath of eastern Australia, including the Brisbane metro area. Rainfall totals in parts of Queensland reached 1,200 mm over the course of the storm, and parts of Brisbane saw up to 280 mm on Monday alone, making it the rainiest single day in those areas in more than 50 years. Significant flooding occurred at the Bremer River in Ipswich, though flooding stayed just below major levels and impacts were not as bad as initially feared. “It feels like we dodged a bullet” noted Ipswich Mayor Teresa Harding. The Warrill Creek at Amberley and the Logan River as Beaudesert both exceeded major flood stage on Tuesday, though waters are now receding at both locations. Moderate flooding was also expected Tuesday at the Stanley River at Woodford, the Lockyer Creek, and the Albert River.
The Verisk ALERT team is continuing to study impacts from Alfred across eastern Australia at this time. We will provide an updated set of similar stochastic events for Alfred on Wednesday, March 12, by afternoon EDT. In the meantime, one of the three event selections from Sunday’s similar stochastic events, event ID 57213, no longer validates well for this event and should no longer be used. The other two event IDs, 82346 and 107326 are still recommended until the next scheduled posting.
