Hurricane Erick made landfall Thursday morning as a Saffir-Simpson category 3 storm near Pinoteca Nacional in the Mexican state of Oaxaca, making it the first landfall of a major hurricane in Mexico in June on record. 14 Mexican municipalities have been impacted by wind and flooding damage, including several landslides. As many as 120,000 customers lost power during the storm, an estimated 30,000 of them in Puerto Escondido. Two deaths have been associated with the storm thus far. Damage has been reported primarily to relatively weaker structures along with boats pushed up on shore by the cyclone’s storm surge.
