Typhoon Kajiki made landfall Monday afternoon local time in Vietnam’s Nghe An and Ha Tinh provinces with peak 1-minute sustained winds around 90 mph, per the Joint Typhoon Warning Center. This follows a close bypass to Hainan and Guangdong provinces in China, where gusty winds downed trees and disrupted travel.
ALERT™ subscribers can download similar stochastic event (SSE) IDs for Typhoon Kajiki’s impacts in Vietnam and China from the Downloads tab of this posting on the ALERT website. Compatible with Touchstone® and Touchstone Re™, the SSEs were selected based on the event’s track, minimum central pressure, estimated winds, forward speed, and landfall angle. They should only be used with exposures in Vietnam and China.

Typhoon Kajiki’s Track (Global Disaster Alert and Coordination System)
Kajiki first impacted the Philippines at Tropical Storm strength before crossing the South China Sea, where it next made a close pass to the city of Sanya on the island of Hainan. In Sanya, thousands of trees were felled, and at least one residential building was flooded. The cities of Wuzhishan, Ledong, and Lingshui also experienced tree damage and interruptions in communications and water mains service. Hainan and nearby parts of Guangdong saw rainfall totals in the range of 250 to 350 mm (10 to 14 inches) as the storm passed by to the south.
Next up for Kajiki was Vietnam, where coastal flooding, uprooted trees, and power outages have all been observed since landfall. Reports from locals described waves passing over streets in immediate coastal areas. Rainfall expectations in Vietnam are in the range of 200 to 400 mm (8 to 16 inches), with the potential for isolated areas to receive as much as 600 mm (24 inches). As Kajiki moves inland through Vietnam, the storm is expected to weaken and eventually dissipate to an open low.
