After a relatively close bypass to Hong Kong, Typhoon Ragasa made landfall near the city of Yangjiang in southern Guangdong province on Wednesday evening as the a Saffir-Simpson category 3 equivalent storm, with maximum 1-minute sustained winds of 120 mph, per the Joint Typhoon Warning Center. The Chinese Meteorological Agency reported a lower landfall intensity, with estimated peak 10-minute sustained winds of 89 mph – adjusted to 1-minute sustained winds, this equates roughly to 102 mph, allowing for uncertainty in the translation.
ALERT™ subscribers can download similar stochastic event (SSE) IDs for Typhoon Ragasa’s impacts in mainland China, Hong Kong, and Macau from the Downloads tab of this posting on the ALERT website. Compatible with Touchstone® and Touchstone Re™, the SSEs were selected based on the event’s track, minimum central pressure, estimated winds, forward speed, and landfall angle. They should only be used with exposures in mainland China, Hong Kong, and Macau.
Ragasa brought travel disruption, tree damage, and coastal flooding to Hong Kong before it reached mainland China. Hong Kong raised its highest typhoon warning signal, no. 10, as the storm picked up, and it remained in place for nearly 11 hours on Wednesday. Hundreds of trees were reported down around the city. From a wind perspective, though, given Ragasa’s center remained about 75 miles offshore, impacts were not as great as feared possible. Posts on social media showed flooding inside the lobby of the Fullerton Hotel, and inundation of the promenade in Tseung Kwan O led to damage to at least one restaurant in that area. All told, 90 people were reported injured in Hong Kong during the storm.
In China, storm surges of up to 9 feet were forecast for the Pearl River delta – one of the most populous areas of the world, but also one of the best prepared for tropical cyclones. Nearly 2 million residents were re-located in advance of the storm. The southern Chinese cities of Zhuhai, Shenzhen and Guangzhou are all expected to have impacts from Ragasa, though at the time of this writing, damage reports for mainland China are still limited.
The Verisk ALERT team is continuing to monitor damage reports from Ragasa. While no additional ALERT postings are currently scheduled, we will consider updating similar stochastic events if warranted. We will communicate any additional plans for Ragasa, should they arise, via this email distribution. In the meantime, please contact your Verisk representative with any questions about this event.
