Typhoon Wipha made landfall Sunday in Taishan, Guangdong province in China on Sunday with maximum 1-minute sustained winds around 65 knots (~74 mph, 120 kph), just barely classifying at Saffir-Simpson category 1. The storm made a close pass to Hong Kong on its way to landfall, where the No. 10 typhoon warning was raised for several hours during the day Sunday. Among the impacts reported in Hong Kong were fallen trees (nearly 500 reported as of Monday morning), major travel disruption, and heavy rainfall. Heavy rain and gusty winds also impacted Guangdong province, and the cities of Shenzhen, Zhuhai, and Macao cancelled or delayed all daytime flights on Sunday.
Early indications of losses from Wipha are that they will be significantly less than 2023’s Typhoon Saola, at least in Hong Kong. “On the first day after Wipha, we observed fewer reported losses as compared to Saola, in construction, building, motor, and home content insurances,” said Eric Hui, CEO of Zurich Insurance (Hong Kong) in an interview with the South China Morning Post. “We also note a decline in losses due to improved customer planning for flight alternatives.” Insurers paid HK$361 million (USD 46.3 million) in claims related to Saola.
