Update 1 | Summary
Posting Date: September 1, 2009, 10:00:00 AM
The Station Fire, which started in the San Gabriel Mountains near Los Angeles, California, on August 26th, continued to grow overnight and is still only 5% contained. By this morning, the fire had consumed more than 122,000 acres (190 sq. miles)—nearly three times as much as only two days earlier—and had destroyed close to 78 structures. More than 12,000 homes are threatened in the communities of La Canada, Glendale, and Pasadena. Firefighting efforts have kept the flames from overrunning Mount Wilson, an important science and communications complex that remains at risk.
Low humidity, extreme temperatures, and tinder-dry vegetation in California have hampered firefighting efforts. Firefighters are planning to construct an eight-mile long fire break today to gain control of the fire and more than 3,600 firefighters have been deployed to battle the blaze. Although temperatures are expected to ease slightly in the next few days and humidity to increase, local authorities expect that it could take several weeks to contain the fire.
The AIR Wildfire team will continue to monitor the fires and provide updates as warranted.
