The South Fork Fire has claimed two lives and 1,400 buildings, largely in the village of Ruidoso, New Mexico, over this past week. The fire has currently burned 17,551 acres and is currently 37% contained. The fire started Monday afternoon near Mescalero at South Fork Canyon. Ruidoso has reopened as of Monday for residents to return, though parts of the village remain off limits. A federal disaster declaration has been issued for this event, and the nearby Salt Fire, which has burned 7,816 acres and is 7% contained as of Monday.
