A series of fast-spreading wildfires is impacting Los Angeles County in southern California. The Palisades, Eaton, and Hurst fires all started Tuesday as Santa Ana winds greater than 60 mph combined with a lack of recent precipitation and extremely low humidity to create a horrifying situation for local residents.
As of last official report, the Palisades fire had scorched close to 3,000 acres, was uncontained, and still growing rapidly. 30,000 people have been evacuated from the affluent Los Angeles neighborhood, where average home values are more than $4 million, per realtor.com. Pacific Palisades borders Malibu and Santa Monica as well as the Pacific Ocean. Some residents had to abandon vehicles as they attempted to evacuate from fire-threatened areas.
The Eaton fire has so far primarily impacted the city of Altadena and has also spread into nearby Pasadena. The fire started on the northern end of Altadena, near Altadena and Midwick Drives, and has spread south toward Highway 210. Multiple structures have been reported to have been destroyed along the foothills in this area. In Pasadena, a Jewish Temple was burned, and images of social media apparently show a several homes and businesses engulfed in flames as well. The Hurst fire started in Sylmar on Tuesday and has since grown to a reported five hundred acres. The Eaton and Hurst fires are both uncontained as of this writing.
Strong winds from the north are forecast to continue for Wednesday, with gusts of 35 to 60 mph expected. Up to now, winds have seriously hampered firefighting efforts. Authorities are hopeful that as winds abate later in the day on Wednesday that firefighting efforts can start to contain the fires to some degree.
The Verisk ALERT and Wildfire teams are closely monitoring these fires and will provide updates as the situation continues to evolve and more details become available.
