The M6.1 came after a series of smaller earthquakes that occurred within the hour prior. As part of the Himalaya region, the affected area is very seismically active and experiences seismic activity frequently due to the northward underthrusting of the Indian tectonic plate beneath the Eurasian plate. Although there were no immediate reports of casualties or damage, the China Earthquake Networks Center (CENC) warned people to stay away from buildings.
