A magnitude 7.6 earthquake struck at a depth of 32.8 km just offshore Mindanao, Philippines on Saturday, killing at least one person and leading to tsunami warnings throughout the region. Measured at magnitude 7.4 by the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology, the temblor was followed by dozens of aftershocks, including four greater than magnitude 6. Initially, tsunami warnings suggested waves of up to 1 meter could hit Japan, Palau, and parts of the east coast of the Philippines, but these warnings were later lifted. A few outlying Japanese islands did report waves up to 0.4 meters. No major damage has been reported from the quake at this time. The event follows a magnitude 6.7 event on the 17th of November which caused some structural damage in and around General Santos City in the southern tip of the island nation.
