Another flood event is underway in Germany, this latest one primarily impacting the southern portion of the country. The states of Bavaria and Baden-Wuerttemberg have been hardest hit thus far, as persistent heavy rain swept through the region - in some areas, more rain fell in 24 hours than the average for the entire month of June. The floods have thus far caused extensive transport disruption, with long-distance rail routes to Munich from the north and west out of action on Monday, and significant damage to property. Four people have died as a result of the flooding, and thousands have been evacuated. While flood waters have started to recede in some areas, water levels are expected to rise in the city of Regensburg and further down the Danube in coming days, and more rain is in the forecast.
The Verisk ALERT and Flood teams are closely monitoring this event. Another ALERT is planned for Wednesday morning, Central European time, which will include a writeup on the latest impacts, a collected shapefile from the latest data from the Copernicus Emergency Management Service, and more information on the areas impacted. Data collection and evaluation of this event for a potential remodeling and industry loss estimate are underway; we will provide an additional update on this aspect later this week, with more specifics on potential timing and deliverables if required.
