Posting Date: May 26, 2021, 5:00:00 PM
Cyclone Yaas made landfall in the state of Odisha in eastern India around 9 a.m. local time (3:30 UTC) on May 26, packing 1-minute sustained winds up to 140 km/h and killing at least six people. More than 1 million people were evacuated from Odisha and neighboring state West Bengal prior to the event, the second landfall in two weeks for the country. Airports in Bhubaneswar, Odisha, and Kolkata were shut down during the event but have since reopened. Storm surge levels of 2 to 4 meters were expected in the Midnapore, Balasore, and Badhrak districts of West Bengal. Although winds have abated significantly and the storm was downgraded after landfall, heavy rain is expected to continue as the system tracks to the northwest.
