After a record setting and unexpected rapid intensification from tropical storm to category five hurricane in only 24 hours, Hurricane Otis made landfall overnight near Acapulco on the Pacific coast of Mexico. Intensity models at this time yesterday pointed to a strong tropical storm or category one or perhaps two at highest storm at landfall, but instead Otis hit the Pacific coast of the Mexico as the most intense storm ever to reach that coastline and appears to be the first at Saffir-Simpson category five. The scope of the damage is not yet well known at the time of this writing; early images on social media appear to show significant damage to a mall and other buildings, but little official information has been released yet. Otis is expected to weaken rapidly today as it moves over the mountainous terrain of southern Mexico.
ALERT™ subscribers can download similar stochastic event (SSE) IDs for Hurricane Otis from the Downloads tab of this posting on the ALERT website. Compatible with Touchstone® and Touchstone Re™, the SSEs were selected based on Otis’ key meteorological parameters at landfall, in particular central pressure, storm track, and forward speed. They may be used with exposures in Mexico.
