Guam Impacts | Summary
Posting Date: May 25, 2023, 4:00:00 PM
Super Typhoon Mawar has strengthened to a Saffir-Simpson category five equivalent storm as it treks westward across the Western Pacific, with maximum 1-minute sustained winds more than 165 mph (~269 km/h), according to the Joint Typhoon Warning Center (JTWC). The storm, the most powerful to form globally in 2023 thus far, made a close pass over the island of Guam on Wednesday, flipping over cars, downing trees, and knocking out power to the vast majority of the island’s 170,000 residents. A category four storm at the time it impacted Guam, Mawar is the most intense storm to make landfall there since 2002’s Super Typhoon Pongsona.
Mawar is expected to maintain its strength over the next two days, perhaps even strengthening a bit further in that time. From there, increasing wind shear and cooler ocean waters and upwelling should cause steady weakening. The track forecast takes the storm continuing due west, then turning to the northeast as it approaches Taiwan. There are some model solutions which take the storm over Okinawa and the eastern side of Honshu in Japan next week, though the forecast uncertainty at this stage remains quite large.
The Verisk ALERT team will continue to monitor Super Typhoon Mawar and will provide updates next week as warranted.
