As of 1200 UTC on Tuesday October 3, Typhoon Koinu was located about 450 km east of the southern tip of Taiwan, with estimated 10-minute sustained winds of 85 knots (98 mph, 157 km/h), and a minimum central pressure of 950 mb. The storm is moving west-northwest at 7 knots.
Model forecasts have narrowed in the past 24 hours and indicate a landfall in southern Taiwan or a near bypass just to the south of the island, very likely at typhoon strength, sometime late Wednesday or early Thursday. Assuming that forecast holds, Verisk plans to release similar stochastic events for Koinu’s impacts on Taiwan no later than Friday morning in the Asia-Pacific region. We will provide an update in the meantime if those plans change.
