Monitoring | Summary
Posting Date: August 29, 2023, 2:00:00 PM
As of 1500 UTC, August 29, Typhoon Saola was located about 150 km north-northeast of the northeast tip of Luzon, with maximum 1-minute sustained winds of 135 knots (155 mph, 250 km/h), moving northwest at 6 knots. Saola is bringing tropical storm force winds to northern areas of Luzon today as the storm makes a pass between the Philippines and Taiwan. The forecast from there is split, with some models taking the storm toward the coast of southern China toward the end of the week, including perhaps Hong Kong, while others keep the storm offshore, eventually curving back to the south.
The Verisk ALERT team will monitor Saola and provide an update later this week as the forecast comes into focus.
