Typhoon Yagi made a second landfall on Saturday in Vietnam as a Saffir-Simpson category 3 equivalent storm. Significant damage has been reported – flooding, landslides, roofs blow off homes and businesses, and structural building damage as well. The city of Haiphong, and industrial hub home to 2 million residents appears to have been particularly hard hit, with many facilities losing roofs and teams on site scrambling to protect what equipment they could from ongoing rainfall. An LG electronics factory in Haiphong was among those sites which sustained significant structural damage from the storm. A bridge in the province of Phu Tho collapsed, submerging several drivers who had been in vehicles on the bridge at the time; 13 of them remain missing as of now. Yagi has killed at least 60 persons in Vietnam and injured at least 240 more; both figures are expected to rise in the coming days.
ALERT™ subscribers can download similar stochastic event (SSE) IDs for Typhoon Yagi from the Downloads tab of this posting on the ALERT website. Compatible with Touchstone® and Touchstone Re™, the SSEs were selected based on the event’s projected key meteorological parameters at landfall, in particular storm track, minimum central pressure, estimated winds, forward speed, and landfall angle. They were selected for exposures in Vietnam.
The Verisk ALERT team continues to study the impacts of Typhoon Yagi across its path. No additional ALERT activity is planned at this time, but additional updates may be provided if warranted.
