According to the National Hurricane Center (NHC) as of 8 a.m. EDT, Dorian was a Category 5 hurricane located at 26.5°N, 76.5°W very near Abaco Island in the northwestern Bahamas and moving west at 8 mph with a central pressure of 927 mb and maximum sustained wind speed of 160 mph.
The NHC forecast states that Dorian is expected to continue moving west “quite slowly over the shallow waters of the northwesternmost Bahamas through Monday.” The storm’s forward movement is expected to slow tonight, then become nearly stationary for about 48 hours, after which it is forecast to turn northward. While Hurricane Dorian’s intensity may change somewhat tonight, it is expected to remain near the high end of the Saffir-Simpson Hurricane Wind Scale. A Florida landfall later this week remains a possibility.
A Hurricane Warning is in effect for the northwestern Bahamas, excluding Andros where a Hurricane Watch is in effect. According to the NHC, a prolonged period of storm surge, hurricane-force winds, and heavy rains are expected on the Abaco Islands and Grand Bahama Island through tomorrow.
A Tropical Storm Warning is in effect for north of Deerfield Beach to Sebastian Inlet, Florida, and a Tropical Storm Warning is in effect for north of Golden Beach to Deerfield Beach, Florida. By midweek portions of Florida’s east coast could experience hurricane-force winds and storm surge. The NHC also notes that the coasts of Georgia, South Carolina, and North Carolina could experience strong winds and storm surge later this week. Coastal areas in the Southeast and Mid-Atlantic could experience heavy rains.
ALERT™ subscribers can now download similar stochastic event (SSE) IDs for Hurricane Dorian from the Downloads tab. Compatible with Touchstone®, Touchstone Re™, and CATRADER®, the SSEs were selected from AIR's standard 10K U.S. Hurricane Model based on event parameters (not industry losses) and should be used only for exposures in Florida, Georgia, South Carolina, and North Carolina.
